Declining Baselines
Seabirds have been long under threat as result of ignorant human activity. Now they are being ravished by avian flu, probably a deliberate result of human interference with the natural world.
The seawater is getting warmer and fish and seabird migratory patterns are changing. In effect, we are and having been moving out of what is referred to in astrobiology as the ‘goldilocks zone’; a zone capable of supporting life.
The abundance of the seabirds has dropped by nearly 70% in the last 60 years which represents a heartbreaking but staggering 230 million birds.
Seabirds have existed for 60 million years. 59 million years ago a massive volcanic eruption formed, amongst other things Staffa Island, an island within the Inner Hebrides.
Let’s imagine the Puffins or their ancestors were there then….
